Hi all, I have a big backpacking trip coming up and want to load up my kindle! Id love to hear fiction and non-fiction suggestions for books to read while I travel to the below countries. Books set in these countries, written by people from these countries, or just books about traveling are all welcome. I tend to read fantasy, historical fiction, romance, or some combination there of, but I’m open to try anything!
Countries I’m traveling to:
South Korea
Japan
Thailand
Vietnam
Philippines
Australia

The Beach – Alex Garland
Legend of the Condor Heroes
Pachinko – Min Jin Lee
The Sacred Willow – Duong Van Mai Elliot
Twilight Territory – Andrew X. Pham
The Things They Carried – Tim O’Brien (about the Vietnam War but it’s really well-written)
The Samurai Way of Baseball – Robert Whiting (non-fiction about Japanese baseball. It’s less about baseball and more about the sport’s place in Japanese culture and how Japan teeters on modern and traditional cultures. Even if you know nothing about baseball, it’s fascinating).
Have a fun trip!
To be totally honest, he’s not my favorite writer, but Simon Winchester is extremely popular and he wrote **Korea: A Walk Through the Land of Miracles** about his long walk across South Korea.
**Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982: A Novel** was an extremely memorable novel about life in Korea.
Shantaram. It’s shitty writing but it’s a really good story.
