I liked Jonathan Spence’s Modern China book a lot. It was pretty comprehensive.

It ranges beyond the 20 year mark, but Red China Blues by Jan Wong is excellent.
She was the first of two western born Chinese women to attend a Chinese University, then she stayed for a while, then returned to Canada and became a journalist, then was a journalist in China, was on scene at Tiannamen, then continued living there and writing books about her experiences including fun stuff, economics, and politics
