Looking for a book that outlines what the South was like in the fist half of the 20th century. Specifically looking to examine the brutal and crushing poverty and racism in the Deep South. TIA!
Gone with the wind, huckleberry Finn, James. All books set in the south and featuring slavery

uncle Tom’s cabin. not exactly based in the south for the entirety of the novel but does not shy away from showing brutality.
I read it a while back so may be rough on the details of it but do remember loving the prose

Others are giving you Civil War era novels. Since you’re looking for 20th century, I highly recommend the nonfiction book Devil in the Grove. You obviously can’t go wrong with Mockingbird, too.
