This might sound strange but I want a standalone dark story that doesn't seem to have a message at first glance or its message is very subtle. I want the story to be enjoyable to read.

A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck
This Thing Between Us
A Short Stay in Hell messed with me. It’s simple on the surface, but the idea just keeps expanding in your head. I finished it and felt kind of hollow.
The Collector also stuck with me. It’s very calm and matter of fact, which somehow makes it worse. No big speech. Just watching it unfold.
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks
The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias
The Lamb by Lucy Rose
These are two I’d my favorite recent horror reads!
We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
{Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty}
The Driver’s Seat, Muriel Spark. It’s a psychological thriller which spirals from seemingly mundane to completely unhinged.
You can take the first three chapters in Rejection as stand alone stories (I think they were initially short stories). They are dark, modern, hilarious, and ridiculous and cringey.
