I'm looking to get back into reading more fiction as an adult and am hoping to maybe start off with some books with similar themes to some of my childhood favorites; growing up I really enjoyed what you might call "survivalist" books like the Island trilogy by Gordon Korman, Flight 29 Down, Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, Robinson Crusoe, etc. I've read memoirs with similar themes like Into the Wild but am looking for an adult fiction version of this type of story. I know there's a lot of overlap with these themes and the dystopian sub-genre but I'm not quite looking to jump into anything with too many sci-fi or futuristic elements quite yet, I'm looking for something that more closely mirrors the real world if possible.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy should scratch that itch.

EDIT: I will say that it’s depicted in an apocalyptic world, but there’s no science fiction otherwise.

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller might be up your alley. Apocalyptic world, but not sci fi.

    3. Follow The River. Based on a true story of survival in the early times US settlement of the east coast.
