Trying to get back into reading to keep my brain from spiraling into dark shit. Both fiction and non-fiction works. Drop a book that straight-up changed your life and tell me why, it’ll make it way easier to pick without frying my depressed-ass brain.

Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright: it’s not arguing the mysticism is literally true, but some of their insights on how our perspective of the world is constructed based on our own expectations are still consistent with today’s understanding of psychology, and meditation is equally scientifically supported as beneficial. It gets a little abstract at the very end, but is broadly useful.
Feeling Good by David Burns provides a variety of techniques based on cognitive behavioral therapy for short-circuiting the harmful self talk that causes depression to spiral. As there are multiple sets of causes for virtually any brain issue, it’s not guaranteed to be effective, but if you search “feeling good bibliotherapy” you can find clinical research indicating that reading the book by itself can be as/more effective than anti-depressant and other treatments like therapy, and even more effective alongside them.
The Book of Mormon changed my life. It helps me believe that there is a purpose in life and meaning to life. For me, life is hard without that. It also helps me focus on trying to be a better person–more aware and thoughtful and giving to those around me.
