I was inspired by this quote from Terry Eagleton's article 'Nothing Nice About Them' from the London Review of Books, where he discusses Wuthering Heights:

Heathcliff and Catherine are frozen in some timeless mythological sphere, locked in a sexless, infantile symbiosis which could never have matured into an adult relationship.

Another point of reference is the French film 2003 film Cap Ou Pas Cap, where two kids grow up playing an infantile game of dare which begins to ruin their lives as they grow older. Or the 1996 Irish play by Enda Walsh, where two inseparable and co-dependent 17 year olds born on the same day in Cork spiral into self-destruction (and destroying the other) due to their inability to find their footing in the adult world.

Basically, I wanna read about two freakazoids who are uniquely obsessed with each other, but because of the foundation of their love (trauma/intensity), should never be in the same room again.

Bonus points if is a gothic (especially landscape/natural disaster as character) or magic realist narrative, although I'm not keen on books to do with war, fantasy or science fiction.

    1. The Last Tale of The Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi is EXACTLY what you’re looking for! Gothic, magical realism, sentient house, two girls in a codependent friendship that only intensifies as they approach adulthood.
