Hi all,
My 8 y/o son is a very good reader and devours books. Unfortunately, he seems to be picking up some rude language/behavior from books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Tom Gates, etc.
What are some good books, even graphic novels, that have young male protagonists who have more “desirable” characteristics? Bonus if the books are funny.
Thank you!!

Hi, I have an 8y/o boy too. We had the same problem. Have you tried Percy Jackson? He tore through that series. He also read The Hobbit, but we looked on eBay for an old illustrated version to get through it and it helped. We have also started Harry Potter and are halfway through it, if you’re open to that series still- I know many families aren’t for…reasons!
John Flanagan,
A Wizard of Earthsea.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is very good. The text is interspersed with pictures that help drive the narrative
The Hoboken Chicken Emergency by Daniel Pinkwater is a hoot. Very funny, very compassionate main character, and a 267-pound chicken named Henrietta.

Lloyd Alexander’s books very often feature young male protagonists with very little common sense, and good hearts, who grow throughout the story. The Chronicles of Prydain are a great place to start, there are some very entertaining characters to lighten the mood.
