A family dinner, a major holiday, a wedding or even a funeral. It can have other settings of course, I just want the family function to be where a lot of the action and plot lies.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, it centers around a family party with flashbacks to fill in the story

The Dinner by Herman Koch. Two sets of parents have dinner to discuss an event that occurred with their teen boys. It’s a really wonderful novel.

[This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6224935) Majorly dysfunctional family, lots of drama, quite a few laughs. And it all takes place after the funeral of the family patriarch and while the whole family sits shiva (7 days of mourning that is a Jewish tradition). It was made into a movie that I actually liked more than the book, but I’m a sucker for Jason Bateman (and most of the other cast).

There are countless locked room murder mysteries that have this premise, but in the literary fiction domain I might recommend ***Cassandra At The Wedding*** by Dorothy Baker

The Townsend Family Recipe for Disaster by Shauna Robinson. I liked it well enough while I was reading it, but scenes, images, and feelings from it have lingered for me long beyond the average book.
