Not read the book you mention but you might like A street cat named Bob – based on a true story, and turned into a feature film.
“James, a busker/Big Issue seller, finds an injured cat (Bob) in his sheltered housing, nursing him back to health. Bob then starts following James to work, changing his life by providing purpose, responsibility, and companionship.”

Oh my gosh I love this request!
Tip: do NOT read Cat Out of Hell by Lynn Truss. The dust jacket left me unprepared for >!cat deaths and cats murdering each other.!<Cute writing style otherwise, though.
