A few that I've read and really liked were Shutter Island and The Silent Patient. Maybe horror isn't the right word (like those too) but something that is disturbing on a mental level.
I do love books with a good twist, but one that makes sense. One that if you were paying attention, you could probably see coming, but not for the whole book. (If that makes sense. I don't mind figuring it out the chapter before, but it shouldn't come completely out of left field OR be obvious from the first couple chapters)
Going to the library in like 2 hours and hoping to snare some ideas!

Not really a genre I’ve explored but a friend of mine did recommend me The Last House of Needless Street by Catriona Ward for a fair twist that is difficult to see ahead but makes sense later along with an unsettling atmosphere.
Darkness, Take My Hand by Dennis Lehane, same author as Shutter Island. More Crime/Mystery but def horror elements.
The first two Hannibal Lecter novels, Red Dragon & The Silence of the Lambs
The Poet by Michael Connelly
