Books like Call me by your name, The secret history, Journey by the moonlight, my year of rest and relaxation..
These are all very different books, yet i can sense a similarity that i am looking for in books. I like that i can learn from these pieces, they are philosophical, psychological, critical, existential, they explore academical themes and have deep engagement with culture. In a sense i call them "intellectualized". For ex. i really like romance but its really hard to find pieces that are not only about having sex and cheating. CMBYN is a perfect example of what im looking for in a romace book.
Anyway, i dont know what to call these type of fiction, and im looking for recommendations!! – genre wise i prefer romance, drama, thriller, coming of age, mystery, horror, new adult (IDK its really hard to describe)

I’m calling it literary romance, fantasy….🤔. Because they are not classics but not fastfood story either. Go beyond label as romance, fantasy, thriller…
– Possession A.S. Byatt
Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
-Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi
– Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
I’d call them ‘existentialist’ – exploring the internal landscape – it’s a popular genre and would include philosophical works like Sartre’s Roads to Freedom, or Camus’ The Stranger.
They don’t have to be heavy intellectual tomes, another modern example could be The Idiot by Elif Batuman which also has those academical vibes.
