Hello! I’m looking for a book recommendation that’s about how to better communicate/talk to people, as I have a bad habit of relating things to myself in conversations, and I’m aware it makes me seem self centered. I just genuinely don’t know how to NOT relate things to myself, since for me it’s the most intimate way to communicate. I’m autistic and have always struggled with talking to people, not just strangers but even friends and partners, and I want a book that I can read that may help (I’m already in therapy but breaking this habit is a lot more difficult than I thought)

I struggled with this exact same thing for years! “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie is old but gold – it really helped me understand that asking follow-up questions about the other person’s experience is way more engaging than jumping to my own stories. Another game-changer was “Nonviolent Communication” by Marshall Rosenberg, which taught me how to reflect back what someone is saying before adding my own perspective. The trick I learned was to force myself to ask at least two questions about their situation before sharing anything personal. It felt super awkward at first but now it’s become natural, and people actually open up way more when they feel heard first.
