I haven't read for a while cause I had 2 under 2, but now the littlest is sleeping well, I want to start reading again but likely will only have a short time before bed. I want something easy to read and put down but that is still engaging. I usually read thriller/crime/mystery but haven't been into them as much lately and I don't want to get stuck in the 'just one more chapter' loop and then suddenly it's 1am.

I'm not overly into romance but I don't mind if it's part of the subplot. Would prefer contemporary over historical. Not a fan of fantasy at all.

I usually read books that keep me thinking but now I want something that will still be easy to wind down with.

    TIA

    1. I started reading books of short stories or essays for this exact reason! It’s way easier to stop when the end of the chapter means the end of that story. Most recent favorite has been The Book of Delights by Ross Gay.

    2. The mediator series by Meg Cabot
      – YA paranormal mystery series (completed)
      – light and fun, so easy to read; but not edge of your seat mysteries that you can’t put down

      .

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series
      – YA mystery trilogy
      – again, didn’t have that can’t-put-this-down quality for me but still engaging stories (except the 3rd book—I hated it but other people did not, so might work for you)
      – I listened to the audiobooks

      .

Have you tried graphic novels? They’re usually much quicker to get through. Some really good ones:
      – Something is Killing the Children (ongoing series)
      – The Night Eaters (trilogy)
      – A Guest in the House (standalone)
      – Long Way Down: The Graphic Novel (standalone)
      – Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees (standalone)

Maybe you’d benefit from some cozier books? Here’s a couple I can think of:

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a lovely story about a very smart octopus and a few people who make an unlikely connection with him.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society this has a little bit of romance but it’s about a woman connecting with a small island community and learning about how they got through WWII when they were invaded.

Oona Out of Order is about a woman who keeps time traveling to different parts of her life.

I’m reading Lula deans little library of banned books and it’s so good, sort of light but still a page turner

Anxious People by Fredrick Backman. It’s not dark, & it’s one of those stories with lots of characters that somehow all connect together by the end!
