I am 21 years old and have not read a book cover to cover in years, probably since junior year of high school. This summer, I will finally have a few months to just relax, and I was looking to get back into it.

My favorite books are Project Hail Mary, Slaughterhouse Five, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Odyssey, and Farenheight 451. I'm not sure if this is of much use, but some of my other favorite stories (in TV) include Attack on Titan, Succession, Severance, and Mr. Robot.

Based on that list, I think some elements I most enjoy include:

    – moral ambiguity

    – mystery / uncovering hidden truth

    – Sci-fi

    – Commentary on relevant issues (I know most, if not all, stories are commentary on current issues, but I prefer it when it's more on the nose – All Quiet, Slaughterhouse, Succession, AOT, Severance, Farenheight)

    – psychological elements (with the narrator or characters – like Mr Robot or Severance)

    – stories that start small but reveal something bigger going on

    – Something that is fun/enjoyable to read – and if not "fun" in content, something that is interesting/moving enough to where I want to come back for more

One thing I am not a fan of is fantasy or overly detailed worlds. For example, I know LOTR and Dune are great books, but I can't really be bothered getting into all of that.

But you all know better than me, and I would greatly appreciate any recommendations you are willing to give!

You could try Red Rising. It’s very fast-paced and has political commentary. It’s good for people getting back into reading.

If you want something more complex maybe The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood
