Last year I got really into the Roman Empire, starting with Scipio and going all the way to the Severan Dynasty. I realized I love learning how history developed through fiction (Im not looking for an academic view) but I want to understand and have an intuition that drove main events and how people actually lived back then.
I'm looking to pick up where I left off (around the 3rd Century). Any recommendations?

I love Dan Jones historical fiction, because he is an actual historian too (his non-fiction books are entertaining in their own way too).
Same with Nigel Tranter, who wrote Scottish historical fiction as well as non-fiction.
I would recommend Marguerite Yourcenar and Gore Vidal – Memoirs of Hadrian/ Julian.
Oh oh oh – I got you!! You need to read the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough!
I loved those – my mom (a Latin teacher) recommended those to me so they are fairly accurate from a historical perspective.
And Colleen was a great writer – you won’t regret it
Not sure if it covers the era you’re looking for though
