I’m looking for something with that stripped down black and white kind of atmosphere, a bit stark, maybe introspective, where tone and character carry more weight than plot.
What books gave you that kind of feeling without trying too hard to be dramatic?

anything by raymond carver hits that vibe perfectly – his short stories have this quiet desperation that just cuts right through you. the road by cormac mccarthy too, feels like you’re reading something that was filmed on old grainy black and white stock
Dashiell Hammett’s detective noir ***The Maltese Falcon*** which recently came into the public domain. It’s a ‘detective’ story, more than a mystery.
