Looking for puzzley mystery novels

I really like puzzle video games, the kind where you solve a mystery as you play. I was hoping to find some mystery novels that feel like that. Not necessarily interactive fiction or a puzzle book- a novel that feels engaging and lets the reader figure things out naturally as they read and maybe get there before the characters.

I'm not very familiar with the mystery genre TBH, so I'm hoping this makes sense and you guys have some ideas for what I might like.

I recently picked up the Strange Houses books and did *not* like them. I liked the idea, but I really didn't like the execution. I thought the story was boring and unbelievable and the writing was bad and the characters just tell you what's going on .. just hated it all together. The format was interesting though so I'm pretty let down and would like something in that vein that doesn't suck, basically.
