Hi! I’m looking for a sci-fi book to gift my boyfriend.
He’s not really a reader but recently said he wants to get into reading. He enjoys sci-fi, especially stories with interesting concepts and some mystery or suspense.
I was considering books like Project Hail Mary and Dark Matter, but I’m very open to other suggestions.
We already watched the Project Hail Mary adaptation and he loved it, so I’m slightly leaning toward something new, but my main goal is just to find a great beginner-friendly sci-fi book for him.
Any recommendations?

Klara and the Sun might work well since it has that mystery element but isnt too heavy on technical stuff – Ishiguro writes in way thats really accessible for new readers
There are a lot of great sci-fi shirt stories that may be easier for a first time reader. I highly suggest anything from ted Chiang, Story of your life is the story from which the movie Arrival was made. If he liked project hail Mary but you want something new, from the same author there’s the martian (from which was made a movie too) which is also pretty nice.
The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch! We’ve got a murder mystery, we’ve got time travel, we’ve got cosmic horror, we’ve got some sexy times…
Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton is quite fun.
The Martian by Andy Weir (also the author who wrote Project Hail Mary – also a movie) is very good.
Both books are quite “easy going”, if that makes sense, and I found both engaging and enjoyable to read.
