Hello everyone! I’ve just finished reading Remarkably Bright Creatures and despite the mixed reviews, I really enjoyed it. I’m not too much of a book reader as I have ADHD and it can be very difficult for me to sit down and engage in a book for more than a few pages. That said, I would love recommendations for books about found family that maybe don’t have a huge romance plot? I love the idea of people finding each other in spite of everything. I also have enjoyed books like A Separate Peace, Tuesdays with Morrie, Flowers for Algernon, and Red White & Royal Blue.
With these books in mind, any suggestions? It would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thank you all so much!

Stotan! by Chris Crutcher
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
If you don’t mind books for a young audience then The Wild Robot Series by Peter Brown
If you’re okay with tragedy then The Long Walk by Stephen King
you might really love *A Man Called Ove* by Fredrik Backman. it’s very character driven and starts off kinda grumpy and small, but then slowly builds into this quiet little network of people who end up caring about each other. it hit me in the same way as Tuesdays with Morrie, just softer and a bit more hopeful
also this is a bit different tonally but Next one piece on thenextonepiece dot substack dot com is something I got surprisingly attached to. it starts off pretty dystopian but then expands into this bigger story where a bunch of very different characters get pulled into the same world and kind of have to figure each other out. it’s more strategic and high stakes, but that “people finding each other under pressure” feeling is definitely there
you could try *The House in the Cerulean Sea* by TJ Klune too. it’s probably the closest thing to pure found family vibes, like a group of very odd people slowly becoming something like a family. it’s gentle and easy to read which helped me when my focus was being annoying lol
and maybe *Anxious People* also by Backman. it’s a bunch of strangers stuck together and you slowly learn everyone’s story, and by the end there’s this unexpected sense of connection that felt really earned to me
honestly I’d lean toward books that are a little episodic or character focused, they’re way easier to stick with when your attention dips and you still get that emotional payoff without forcing it too much
