And I don't mean a recliner in your garden, I mean all those pics of people sitting on a log or the ground, or even a park bench somewhere near water and vegetation undoubtedly being assaulted by all kinds of insects. Do any of you actually do it or is it just people who like to post pictures of themselves reading? Cause I've tried that before, and all I got from it was back pain and mosquito bites.

    1. Park bench, sure. By wilderness I thought you meant like middle of nowhere camping, which is also a yes.

    2. I’ve done it. Charging my motorcycle next to a park, I ended up reading laying on my jacket on the ground. It wasn’t super comfortable. Didn’t take any pictures, sorry ;).

I do! I’m in a country where every day of sunshine is precious and I feel like I’m wasting it indoors. Head out, walk, lunch and rest with a book for a bit, thermos full of tea, head home once it starts to feel chilly again.

    4. Sometimes, yes. But usually when traveling. I‘ve been to London recently and was reading a lot on the go.

Also sometimes at the river when the weather is nice.

    5. I dunno what pictures you’re seeing, but yeah I love going to a park or camping with my books. If you’re getting bitten, have you tried bug spray?

    6. Sure. Early spring when there are few if any bugs. Late fall, like a cool sunny day after a frost or two. Bug free.

    7. I’ve sat on a park bench and cracked open a book. If I tried to sit on a log and read, my back would be SCREAMING! lol

How wilderness are we talking? Because i’ve definitely sat outside on public benches to read. Whether thats taking a break in a park, grabbing a beer at a brewery then heading outside to read, wanting a break while running errands or eating lunch or whatever, enjoying the nice gardens near me etc.

Like, I enjoy being outside but don’t always want to be staring at a tree or walking constantly. Reading is a good activity that lets me just sit and enjoy the sunshine without doomscrolling or staring blankly at the world.

    9. I’ve got a book with me almost everywhere I go. If light, precipitation, wind, bugs, etc aren’t unfavorable, I will be found reading. I’ve read on mountains, beaches ,and many places in between. My best reading is done in my reading chair at home though.

Sprawled out in the park for a college quad with a book and some sunshine, what a joy.

Camping – what are you going to do if you don’t have books? Assuming you’re doing real camping and don’t have electricity, that’s pretty much what you’ve got for entertainment!

Logs, though, – agree about the lack of back support. I always brought a hammock with me.

    11. I have!

There was a trail i used to hike and run frequently, and every time I passed a particular spot I always thought it would be a lovely place to read.

So I eventually brought a book, ran to the door, read for about 45 minutes, and finished my run.

I was right. It *was* lovely!

    12. I do read outside sometimes, but I don’t like to show off my literacy in front of wild animals.

    13. I tried it once while taking a break on a long hike. Nature was far too distracting to concentrate on my book. At the end of the day, I was hiking because I wanted to be in nature, not read a book. I can read anytime at home.

    14. I’ve done it plenty of times. I go on a hike, find a comfortable place somewhere on the way, and start reading. Or sometimes, if I’m on vacation, I’ll find a good spot in nature, set up a hammock and read there.

Yes. A local park (with a hammock), on hikes (when we hike in a group we read books aloud while resting), while camping… I rarely leave the house for a longer period of time without a book. Just get some bug spray if you must. Insects are a part of nature.

    16. I take hikes for exercise and I bring a book with me to read when I want a break. It’s quite nice. Sometimes I got a cave and hang out and read there. So yes. I prefer it to fishing because it’s more interesting and I’m not just torturing some fish with a brain the size of a peanut.

Anyone posting photos of themselves reading in any environment, isn’t posting a photo of themselves reading… They’re posing for a photo.

      The book is a prop

When I lived in the wilderness, yes, all the time. I had a bunch of favorite places to sit and enjoy some quiet time, and as a voracious reader I always had a book with me. So the book would naturally just sort of find its way out of my bag while I was out there soaking up the scenery.

I wouldn’t say “assaulted by insects” – they were there, but when you spend a lot of time in nature, you do just sort of get used to nature happening around you.

Nowadays I’m in the city but I do still specifically go to parks to read when the weather is nice. The one nearest where I live always has multiple people laying on the lawn reading. Nobody uses the benches for the purpose because they are uncomfortable AF.

    19. I set up my hammock and read in parks all the time. I love Florida, I love being outside, I love to read. If it’s too hot, I put it up in the shade. If there’s bugs, I wear a natural but repellant.

    20. I take a book or my Kindle on almost every solo hike. I don’t always read, but if I find a good rock by the river, it can be pretty relaxing to take a break for some snacks and a few chapters.
