I'm going on my honeymoon next week and would love some good book suggestions for when we're relaxing by the pool (and also to get me through the 10 hour flights).
I love weird books, and I already have My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh packed, so any suggestions with a similar vibe would be very much welcomed.
Favourite genres include: Science fiction, literary fiction, horror/thriller and fantasy every so often. My only stipulation is that it has to be a bit weird 😅
I don't read much romance and I'm not usually a big fan of books with lots of graphic smut but I do mostly read adult books over YA.
Thanks for reading!

If you want weird, you want Jeff VanderMeer. He’s most widely known for *Annihilation*/The Southern Reach series but all of his books have a delicious weirdness to them. A particularly good one I finished recently is *Borne*.
If you wanna get REALLY weird, give *Vurt* by Jeff Noon a try. It’s definitely not everybody’s cup of tea, but it IS sci-fi and it IS absolutely, unapologetically weird. I’m reading the second book of that series now and it’s every bit as weird but also different. This one is less of a series and more just a handful of books that take place in the same universe, and have some crossover but could also easily stand on their own.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
I haven’t read it yet but it’s been on my list for a few months now: The Imaginary Corpse by Tyler Hayes. It’s like Toy Story 3 if it was noir??
The Dark Futures series by John Marrs! The Family Experiment was my fave, but The One and The Marriage Act are also great.

Lanark by Alasdair Gray.
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott. It’s about a Square and his life in the 2D world.
The Brick Moon by Edward Everett Hale. It’s the first known description of an artificial satellite (1869).
Uh, almost anything by Haruki Murakami 😅 perhaps Sputnik Sweetheart will be a good starting spot?
But IMO don’t bother with 1Q84 – I attempted it 3x before finally admitting a DNF
Night of the Living Trekkies was amusing to read, as a star trek fan. XD
Geek Love
Bunny
Definitely check out the weird girl literature sub if you haven’t already !!! Lots of good recs on there.
I mean if you want weird , The Hike by Drew Magary is kind of Alice in wonderland meets a horror movie.
My favorite weird books skew YA, but here you go: Geek Love, Going Bovine, Grasshopper Jungle, and I Crawl Through It.
It doesn’t get much weirder than the John Dies at the end series.
Paradise Logic is SO weird and funny
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
Sky Daddy by Kate Folk! It’s profoundly weird (not genre Weird), and extremely enjoyable. Perfect alternative holiday reading, especially if you’ve got some Moshfeg
One Yellow Eye by Leigh Radford too – sort of zombie novel about a woman with her zombie husband chained up in their flat while she works for the shadowy agency trying to find a cure. Very compelling and interesting take on a zombie outbreak story and another extremely enjoyable and engaging alternative holiday read
Big Swiss
DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL!!!!
*Bury Your Gays* and *Lucky Day* by Chuck Tingle are good weird horror/thrillers. If you want to try something weird and funny I’d suggest *I’m Starting to Worry About This Black Box of Doom* by Jason Pargin.
Weird, but interesting and complex, a little dark/horror/dystopian
Blindness by José Saramago
I also was very weirded out by a collection of Neil Gaiman short stories- “Fragile Things”
Poor Things
The three-body problem
Piranesi
Dungeon Crawler Carl
***The Library at Mount Char*** by Scott Hawkins is the only book where I went “What did I just read?” when I reached THE END.
