put this under the romance flair but i’m more looking for books that have doomed and/or very complicated love stories rather than something happy and romantic. in the past year i’ve read normal people by sally rooney and one day by david nicholls and absolutely loved both. i absolutely devooooouuuur doomed love stories.
no preference if the characters end up together or not, but no spoilers please! can be classic, contemporary, lgbtq, translated, anything! as long as it’s got some sort of doomed love. preferably not “spice” driven or things like that.

That’s a fun question!
I loved A Curse for the Homesick. It reads a bit YA, but I loved the characters and the bit of magic. I also love small fictional islands with fog and sheep everywhere.
I also think Swimming in the Dark might fit this. Half historical fiction from Poland during cold war, half a love story.
There’s complicated relationships in Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and I really enjoyed the book.
I wanted to recommend something, but I feel like maybe none of what I suggested fits the vibe of Normal People. All were great books in my opinion though.
EDIT spelling
Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow
Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall was the first thing that came to mind.
