I just turned 34 and I keep gravitating toward YA fantasy and contemporary YA. I loved the Raven Cycle and anything by Holly Black. But lately I feel weird picking up new YA releases because I worry I'm not the target audience anymore. My friends all read literary fiction or thrillers. I don't want to miss out on good books just because of the age label. Are there other adults here who still read YA? And if so, what recent YA books would you recommend that don't feel too young? I still want good writing and complex characters, just maybe not the super juvenile stuff.

No but you are too old to be asking this question on the Internet.
At 34, do whatever you feel like doing. You need no permissions. Okay, legal things. 🙂
No!! Reading is reading 🙂
I’m 40 and still read manga and watch cartoons, so… You’re never too old to do what you like.
Honestly, same here – I’m in my 30s and I basically live in YA fantasy at this point 😄 I keep trying to branch out, but I always end up back with magic and enemies-to-lovers.
I’m completely obsessed with A Court of Thorns and Roses, Fourth Wing, and From Blood and Ash – like, give me drama, romance, and a slightly unhinged fantasy world and I’m happy.
Right now I’m reading Throne of Glass and loving it too.
I think “YA” is just a label – there are so many books with great writing and complex characters if you pick the right ones. You’re definitely not alone, and you’re not “too old” for stories you enjoy 🤗
A good YA book can be just as quality as others just lighter, less complicated. Great for a tired brain after a work week.
I read Skyward series and absolutely loved it, not as complicated as Mistborn but it fit my needs when I didn’t have the mental energy for larger tomes..
