I am currently reading Blood Meridian and Judge Holden is an AMAZING example of this. The judge, in all his weirdness, could technically be completely natural and he hasn't gone so far as to fly out of his shoes (YET, I am about 2/3s the way through the book). Atlanta is another piece of media that absolutely nails this. Episodes will be completely grounded in reality and out of nowhere, a subplot has a moment where a character gets hit by an invisible car. No one cares to think about it too much, but it's clear that there is something supernatural or not quite real about what has happened. Are there any books that capture this kind of feeling where everything feels like it's grounded in reality until someone / something comes along and while it COULD be real, it feels off?
