Hi all! I’m looking for some suggestions that explore when following the rules, social norms, or being polite turns out negatively, perhaps continuously so. An example would be the movie Speak No Evil, or I guess an extreme example would be Justine. I want something with substance that makes me think or even a thriller or something transgressive.

Maybe look into We Need to Talk About Kevin – it’s about how surface-level politeness in family dynamics can mask some really dark stuff underneath. The whole book explores what happens when everyone just goes along with social expectations instead of addressing obvious problems.
Also The Handmaid’s Tale might work since it shows how compliance with “proper” behavior can lead people straight into nightmare scenarios. Both books really dig into how dangerous it can be when we just follow rules without questioning them.
