I know tons of readers love their books, but I’ve read some and I only liked one (Jodi’s Wish You Were Here, my first read). Please tell me what you DON’T LIKE about their books. I’m having trouble being able to put my finger on it and explain my dislike, so maybe I can pinpoint it with help from some of you. (Please don’t comment on what you love or enjoy about them.) But maybe you can suggest ones that don’t fall into the same traps (current or historical issues rehashed to death, predictability, etc).

Kristin Hannah has good enough ideas but she’s not a strong enough writer to tell the stories well. She tells too much and doesn’t show. Her characters do not read to me like actual people, they’re always missing some depth or dimension that makes them not ring true. She writes clunky dialogue. The Women is the worst offender and it put me off her books for good.
Jodi Picoult is fine, but soapy. I don’t think she’s pretending to be as literary as Kristin Hannah is.
Rant over.
You don’t need to justify not liking their books.
