I was a horse girl growing up. So I've read all the classics (Black Stallion, My Friend Flicka, National Velvet, etc) and all the children series (Throughbred, Saddle Club, Heartland, Unicorns of Balinor). I would like a book or series that's just a bit more grown up where the main character has a bond with a specific horse or unicorn. YA books are also fine. Thank you!

The Last Dragonlord series features highly intelligent horses who bond to their Dragonlord companions. It’s not the main focus but they’re an important component of the story.
You might like Dun Lady’s Jess/Changespell Saga by Doranna Durgin. It’s a little different than what you’re looking for, but sort of in the same vein.
Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books are set in a fantasy world where many of the characters have a special magic/psychic bond with their Companions, which appear as white horses (but are something more complex & intelligent, trying not to give any spoilers)
There are MANY Valdemar books but they’re mostly collected into trilogies. They’re also pretty, like, trauma-heavy, so maybe check the trigger warnings for the different trilogies before you start.
