I've recently been working on getting back into reading. Been making good time to get through a handful, and The Inheritance Games was what I'd describe as "easy to read" with a brisk prose. I've been advancing through the series, and then I found out the third book was marketed as a "tiktok sensation" and I had an "uh oh" response.

I understand Tiktok books have kind of a stigma against them, for being so devoid of description and narration, and designed for rapid dopamine hits that they're the only form of literature that tiktok-brained young people can read. So if I'm finding it easier to read something that was a hit there, I get a little insecure on if it reflects something about me. Like what if that describes me too? That I'm so zoomer-brained that this is the only sort of book I could read so comfortably?

But then, I haven't read other booktok hits, so I dunno if this series really reflects all that. Does anyone here have a perspective on tiktok culture to say if this series fits that brand or nah?

    1. I don’t have a TikTok third book was the worst book I’ve ever read. It was so bad I couldn’t stop reading it

The third book in this series is one of the only books I’ve ever put down after finishing and got genuinely angry that they wasted my time.

Other people loved the series. It’s really hard to say without knowing more about you and your tastes.

    3. I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman also blew up on tiktok, I wanna say in 2024. I loved it, I had heard about it and read it in early 2023 before it really gained traction. It made me happy that so many other people started to pick it up, that might not have happened if it didn’t blow up on tiktok.

A book being popular on tiktok doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be bad, just that enough people who happen to be on tiktok liked it.
