The text blends historical facts with the author’s own research doubts, writing struggles, and self-questioning. The story isn’t just about the past ; it’s also about how we try to tell that story today, making the process of writing a central part of the narrative.

Yes, it’s a great book. You may be interested in the late Javier Marias (not so much historiographic, but with a similar reflexiveness) such as his two last ones. Krasznahorkai takes a similar approach, but again not so much historiographic. Antonio Scurati’s M would probably fit the bill. Also check out the work of Peter Nadas, If you prefer more metafiction, then The Tunnel by William Gass is his personal history mixed with thoughts on writing.
