I've been starting to read books since last year, but most of the books i finish tend to be sci-fi. I have read The Martian, Project Hail Mary, Three Body Problem trilogy, and now reading The Expanse series.

I want my next book to be outside the genre. What book(s) would you recommend? Thanks!

My boyfriend is a big sci-fi guy. We’re both fans of The Murderbot Diaries, and Martha Wells also has a new fantasy series starting with “Witch King” that my boyfriend is really enjoying (but I have not read yet).

Some of my favorite books are
Every Day by David Leviathan(YA Romance)
The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort (Memoir)
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (YA Fantasy)
Stuck Up and Stupid by Angourie Rice and Kate Rice (YA Romantic Comedy)
The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave (Thriller)
      IT by Stephen King (Horror)
And really anything by Douglass Preston and Lincoln Child(they have sci-fi and non sci-fi stuff)

How do you feel about fantasy? If it fits here, look at The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, first books Storm front.

If you want non-fantasy to go with your non-sci-fi how about the Esrth’s Children series by Jean Auel, first book The Clan of the Cave Bear?

For Rom-com how about Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer, Agnes and the Hitman and other books by them.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez Love in the Time of Cholera

For a classic A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Another classic The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Shogun by James Clavell and his other books in his Asian Saga

Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt. It’s about the women mathematicians of JPL who helped create missiles and the early rockets of the space program with pencils, paper, and slide rules.

      Fiction

      James by Percival Everett

Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. post sci fi, wraps back around into magical realism, kind of. Stunningly beautiful, evocative prose.

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. meticulously researched historical retelling of the 1893 Chicago worlds fair through the opposing lenses of the lead architect and a serial killer operating during the event.
