I just finished rereading The Dark Garden by Margaret Buffie, a gothic ghost story aimed at teens that's about a girl with traumatic amnesia after a bike accident whose memories keep getting mixed up with a woman who died in the house long ago. I loved how unsettling it was that she would look at an old, uncared for garden and swear she planted the fully grown gnarled trees. Another element was that her home life was far from ideal with neglectful parents who were mostly upset she wasn't able to go back to running the household by herself.

When I finished the book I looked up reviews and people said it was not super original in concept but I'm not familiar with any other book that uses amnesia as a plot device in this way. I'd prefer something more grown-up and horror in genre, but I'll also read YA or teen fiction. I'd also settle for a good mystery – I also have read Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella and while it's definitely lighter in tone it does have a genuinely interesting mystery about why the main character's life has changed so drastically over the last couple years .

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver has some similar memory confusion vibes but it’s more time loop than straight amnesia – still messes with your head though

Not so much a “horror” element (but maybe a mystery?) is Project Hail Mary. The protagonist wakes up alone on a space ship with no memories around why he’s on that ship or how he got there. A significant part of the plot in Act 1 is him trying to figure all that stuff out.

    3. The Wicked Sister by Karen Dionne. The MC has no memory of having killed her parents and several years later sets out to find out what happened.
