I’m buying some books off of Amazon for research and wanna know if you all have any good suggestions for books relating to Gnosticism or Alchemy that:
– Delve into the respective systems of the topic
– Is a reliable, academic source
– Talks about the history of how it came to form (less of a high priority, but still would be appreciated!)
If you have a good suggestion, give me a link and a rundown of it so I can check the book out. Thanks!

Carl Jung’s stuff on alchemy is pretty solid if you can handle dense reading – he goes deep into the psychological aspects and connects it with his analytical psychology work. The Red Book has some wild alchemical imagery but might be bit too esoteric for pure research
For gnosticism, Elaine Pagels writes really accessible academic stuff that doesn’t feel like torture to read. Her work on the Nag Hammadi texts is considered standard in field. There’s also some good collections of primary gnostic texts that give you direct access to original sources instead of just interpretations
I remember doing some research for design project few years back and found that starting with broader survey books first helped me understand the context before diving into more specialized stuff. The academic presses usually have better quality control than random publishers too
