I’m trying to come up with a few books to gift each of my nine-year-old nieces (J&E)

J loves The Spirit of the West books, and the film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and the Hoofbeats books (especially the Katie and the Mustang ones). She also loves the Black Beauty, both the original book and the 1990s film adaption. She really likes the Boy Called Bat books. She also loves the tv show FEI RIDE Originals, and the show Carl the Collector.

E loves the Harry Potter books. She also really likes The Kicks, both the books series and the tv show. She loves the movies Beauty and the Beast (both the animated and the live-action), the animated Mulan, and Moana. She also loves the show Cyberchase.

Oh there is SO much good stuff for this age. I have a long list I made for a relative of mine who teaches fourth grade. I don’t know too much about the books you mention for J but for your fantasy kid E I have lots of suggestions

Realistic fiction/magical realism (sounds like they both might like):

      Wonder by RJ Palacio

Willow Falls series by Wendy Mass, or her Candymakers books

      The Penderwicks series

For your Harry Potter kid (these are series, so just make sure you get the first book):

      Narnia

      Septimus Heap

      Peter and the Starcatchers

      Sisters Grimm

      Dragon Slippers

      Land of Stories

      Ranger’s Apprentice

      Mysterious Benedict Society

I read and adored all of these as a kid. lmk if you have any questions 🙂

For the niece that likes horses Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry is a classic. As is National Velvet by Erin Bagnold.

I loved the Wild At Heart: Adventures in the Animal Clinic from American Girl.

I also really like the Thoroughbred series of books by Joanna Campbell.

For your other niece the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce. Tamora is one Of the greats for fantasy books for mid grade and YA. this series is the series she wrote for the younger audience members.

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale is very good as well.
