I am a picky reader with little spare time, so please bear with my lack of understanding/book knowledge.
I don’t mind childish reads and I also don’t mind heavy books. I quite like fantasy and thrillers but what I’m looking for is a book with a good romance subplot. I’ve never finished a romance book before. That’s probably because what I’m looking for is exactly the opposite of what’s in the market.
Here’s what I would LOVE:
• vicious, ruthless, apathetic FMC (at least more than the MMC)
• ENEMIES.
• slowburn
• MMC who is soft and kind to everyone (but the FMC?) / “hero”, good morals
• “team” dynamics within a friend group
• academia/academic rivals
and what i hate:
•pregnancy, arranged marriage, mafia, all the “alpha male” stuff…
• weak, shy FMC
• FMC head over heels for the MMC
I understand that this is oddly specific, but I would be fine even only with a small hint of potential romance/tension. I really liked the dynamic between Rin and Nezha for example even though there was no romance whatsoever.

If there’s any wiggle room in your trope list: The Last Boy And Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian. It’s not a fantasy, although the premise (a town is going to be flooded for a reservoir and everyone needs to leave) is a little out there.
The female lead is kind of a “class clown” whose humor gets a little mean, and she’s immature and sucks, but she isn’t some evil villain.
The blurb misleads you as to who her love interest is, so don’t let that fool you, that part fits.
Omg tpw mentioned on reddit in a positive way 🥹 I absolutely loved their dynamic and i’m still chasing that high. Nothing has hit the same since.
I don’t want to comment without recommending, so I think the cruel prince could fit some of the points you want? its enemies to lovers and the fmc has that ruthlessness you’re looking for. very basic recommendation I know lol
