I don’t just want to read a book; I want to move into it for the weekend. I’m looking for a massive, sprawling epic with serious historical weight. Love the characters that live with you for years after finishing.
Loved: The Son by Philipp Meyer, Lonesome Dove, Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Pillars of the Earth.
Edit: Forgot to mention I read all 4 Lonesome Dove books and loved all of them. Also loved the first part (Gid POV) of Leaving Cheyenne.

Anything by Elmer Kelton. His Ranger series consists of 9 books and covers about fifty years, the 1830s to 1880s.
Stand Proud is a great book that covers a guy’s life from when he was a young man during the Civil War to him being a rancher around the turn of the century.
Kelton has books that take place from the early 1800s all the way to the 1980s when they were written. He was the son & grandson of working cowboys and he worked for years as a stock reporter for the San Angelo, Texas newspaper.
In case you can’t tell, he’s probably my favorite author of all time.
East Of Eden.
A novel by M M Kaye, such as Trade Wind or The Far Pavilions. Or any of Mary Renaults historical novels. Or The Demon Breed by James H Schmitz (oldies but goodie).
Pillars of the Earth….
