I am going through it and in a tough spot mentally. I am very much a mood reader and I like my books to match my mood or be somewhat adjacent to it. No fluffy stuff if I'm sad. I also LOVE "weird girl books" so if you know one that deals with mental illness or overall sad themes, let me know.

I need a book where the character(s) are going through it. Examples of stuff I have read: my year of rest and relaxation, the bell jar, no longer human, a little life, the virgin suicides, Eleanor oliphant is completely fine

Any genre except self help type stuff. I dont want it to feel good or uplifting lol. Ive also enjoyed memoirs that deal with mental health like I want to die but I want to eat ttekbokki, girl interrupted, in the dream house, im glad my mom died.

Highly recommend She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb and White Oleander by Janet Fitch.

When Rabbit Howls and The Flock are both about women suffering from DID (dissociative identity disorder, multiple “alters” residing in the same brain). The first one was written by the woman and her alters, the second by the psychiatrist treating the woman. Both are harrowing and show how much damage extreme childhood abuse and trauma can impact the brain but also how amazingly resilient the brain can be in protecting itself. I know the woman from the first book (Trudy Chase) was interviewed by Oprah and it was …. Intense. The first one is also heavier and may be a bit harder to wrap your mind around due to the internal descriptions of how the “system” of the “troop formation” works in her mind. Super eye opening but I definitely had to read it in small doses because of the memories revealed and how vivid the fear and helplessness she felt was.

The Idiot by Elif Batuman, There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job, Strange Weather in Tokyo, Almond, Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. I could go on, but these all fit this vibe!! This request is right up my alley 😂
