I’m looking for some book suggestions for a 10 year old and would love to hear what actually worked for your kids (or what you loved at that age). They’re at that stage where they’re moving away from shorter chapter books but aren't quite ready for the heavy "young adult" themes yet. We are looking for something that is a real page-turner, maybe a great fantasy series, a funny contemporary story, or even a graphic novel that's hard to put down.

What are the "can't-miss" books for this age group? I’d prefer things that aren't necessarily the super obvious ones like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, since we’ve already checked those out. I’d love to find some hidden gems or newer releases that really captured a kid's imagination and kept them reading past their bedtime. Thanks in advance!

The Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi is perfect for this age – it’s got that fantasy adventure vibe with amazing artwork that keeps kids glued to the pages. For something more contemporary and hilarious, the Middle School series gets kids cracking up while they’re reading, which is always a win

My niece also got obsessed with the Wings of Fire books around that age, they’re like crack for fantasy-loving kids who want something with dragons but more depth than the usual fare. The graphic novel format of some of these really helps bridge that gap between chapter books and longer novels too

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman!! Even reading it as an adult I still think it’s a masterpiece, could not put that book down. Highly recommend if they haven’t picked it up yet!
