Hi! I used to be an avid reader, but I’ve been stuck in a year-long reading slump. I really want to get into reading again, so I’d love some suggestions. I’m hoping for a book that isn’t too long, as I’d love to be able to bring it with me on a trip this week.
Books I’ve read and loved:
Wuthering heights, Emma, Rebecca, Pride and prejudice, Bonjour tristesse
Something I’ve realized is that I enjoy reading about somewhat disliked female protagonists (Catherine earnshaw, Emma woodhouse (debatable but said by Jane Austen herself !) I also prefer books focused on women and their experiences/relationships.

I read Stoner by John Williams when I was 13 and found it really easy to get through and it still remains one of my all time favs today
It follows the main character from the start of his adult life to the end of it, so I’d say its pretty fast paced
I unfortunately don’t have any specific recommendations but my local library offers a suggestion service that you explain what you’re looking for and they’ll recommend you 10 books they feel falls in with what you want that they have there in the library. It’s really cool. Maybe yours might have something like that too.
Have you read *Jane Eyre* (Charlotte Brontë) or *Tenant of Wildfell Hall* (Anne Brontë)? Both of those are terrific and tick a lot of your boxes.
*We Have Always Lived in the Castle* by Shirley Jackson is pretty short and very good, and the protagonist is hated by many of the other characters.
If you ever get in the mood for a longer novel, *Vanity Fair* by William Makepeace Thackeray features a very interesting protagonist, Becky Sharp, who is considered a “bad girl.”
