Tired of reading about brilliant detectives with dark pasts or struggling artists who can barely function. Just once I want someone who shows up on time, knows their craft, solves problems calmly, and goes home at five. No drinking problem. No tragic backstory. No world ending stakes. A plumber who fixes pipes well. A teacher who enjoys grading papers. A librarian who alphabetizes with quiet satisfaction.
Does anyone know a book where competence is the plot and peace is the ending?

Stoner seems to fit that description
Convenience Store Woman is about a woman who is very competent at working at a convenience store.
What is it that you want from the novel, though? Because I can’t imagine there are many books where the entire plot is ‘someone is good at their job but not too good’ and there’s no conflict.
