I'm trying to build some short story lessons into my students' classes for next semester. I'm aiming for stuff that's not too long (so alas, "The Great God Pan" is out), but still high-quality. Unfortunately, most of my choices (Jamaica Kinkcaid's "Girl," Ted Chaing's "Story of Your Life," etc.) are from the late 20th century. I'd love to have recommendations for stuff that either pre-dates the 1980s or was published in the last 10 years.

For the record, I use a lot of Poe in another class, hence why I'm skipping him for this new curriculum.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. The Man Who Travelled in Elephants by Robert A Heinlein.

All You Zombies by Robert A Heinlein.

      Nightfall by Isaac Asimov.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison (if your students are 18+ only)

Helen O’Loy by Lester del Rey.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K Dick.

Anything in the Science Fiction Hall of Fame anthology or Dangerous Visions (edited by Harlan Ellison) would be good. Some are more timely than others at the moment, as would be true of any genre, no doubt.

A backpack filled with sunsets by ifeanyi Ogbo..I think it was published within the last couple of years. It’s a beautiful short story collection I read last year that moved me deeply..
