I just finished The Dog Stars and I really liked it. I needed something short and sweet after reading The Devils and Swan Song immediately prior. What else can I read that’s similar in theme but is not an 800 page commitment right now? Are other Peter Heller books just as good?

Most of Heller’s books are great, but most aren’t post apocalyptic like DS. 3 are more non-fic travel/environmental. The Painter is an all time fave of mine. The River is great. Kook is fun! I personally didn’t enjoy Burn or The Guide all that much, but they lean more post apocalyptic/dystopian like DS, and have his signature nature/atmospheric writing that I love, but not anywhere close to the feelings of DS for me. Celine, The Last Ranger, The Orchard were good (to me) but I can see why some won’t connect. I have read all his books except for The Whale Warriors (which I am saving for when I need a real win for writing.)

Can you tell us what you connected most with about Dog Stars (was it the setting, genre, or lone man story, or other?) That may help us help you. Without knowing, you may possibly like The Road and/or Wolves in Winter.
