I’ve recently started getting back into reading, and one thing I really want to do is explore literature from different countries and cultures. Right now I’m especially curious about german literature, since I’ve always heard it has a very unique atmosphere and psychological depth.

Some of my favorite works and themes tend to be more emotional, melancholic, atmospheric, introspective, and character-focused. My favorite novel of all time is Dream of the Red Chamber, and I’m currently reading Rebecca and loving it so far. I also really enjoy "darker" atmospheres, emotionally complex characters, beautiful prose, themes of loneliness, memory, femininity, obsession, family dynamics, etc.

I’m open to classics and modern works alike. Especially books that feel immersive, strange, emotional or deeply atmospheric.

What german books/authors would you recommend for someone with this kind of taste?
