Sorry this is very niche! But basically I love books that take the world we know and add a slight twist on them, especially if that twist is something like characters with supernatural talents (although I also like plain old fantasy!)

I would love any recommendations you guys might have for YA books with that kind of theme, especially if they include romance – two examples I can think of are my favourite books ever, the Guardians of Time series by Marianne Curley, and David Levithan’s Every Day and related series which I bought the sequel to just a few days ago for my birthday!!

Also, although not strictly related (hopefully the mods won’t mind) I also really enjoy writing stories and have been looking to get back into it recently, so if you have any ideas for books that have not yet been written I would also love to hear them!

    1. The mediator series by Meg Cabot is a YA mystery with romance eventually. About a girl who can see and talk to ghosts.

Cemetery boys by Aiden Thomas is also a ghost YA story with romance

Never sure what counts as YA, but CJ Archer (Glass and Steele, Ministry of Curiosities, Emily Chambers/Freak House) are all somewhere in Victorian/regency/whatever-ish England with different approaches to magic and youngish female leads coming into the world with a romance plot.

    3. The Lunar Chronicles, starting with the book Cinder, are a sci-fi twist on classic fairy tales, with some good romance and adventure. The characters have some abilities that seem more like magic than sci-fi. I thought it would be cheesy, but really enjoyed them.

You should have been around 15 years ago; my Barnes & Noble had a whole section of YA devoted to this. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick and Elixir by Hilary Duff are the first two that come to mind. Oh, also I think the House of Night series by PC and Kristin Cast had romance elements.

Edit: I remembered a whole bunch more.

      • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia

      • Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

      • City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

      • Twilight, obviously

    5. Remember me tomorrow by farah heron, possibly. It’s not necessarily magic powers but it is time travel-y and paranormal.

    6. *Ballad & Dagger* by Daniel José Older

I wouldn’t label it romantasy, but it does have a very prominent romantic plot (too romantic for me, to be honest, but it could be exactly right for you). The genre is urban fantasy, which, if I understand you correctly, is the term for what you are looking for.

(By the way, there is a whole sub called r/YAlit that you might want to search!)
