How does one choose a first novel?

Question first. How does one choose his first Novel?

I have read Harry Potter after loving the movies.
And I read manga almost daily.
But I have a strong interest in starting to read novels.
I’m all about witches , magic, dragons, fantastical creatures etc. so I’m mostly interested in fantasy / romance fantasy novels.

I find it so overwhelming to choose a good first book though.

Is the obvious answer “just go for it” ? Or how do you guys make that choice ?
