So I just finished Project Hail Mary (read it before watching the movie) and I'm kinda struggling to connect with my next book. I have a few in the back burner but none are really grabbing my attention, I need something fresh and unanticipated.
So far my recent favorites have been:
Project Hail Mary
The Martian
The Southern Reach tetralogy
Silo trilogy
The Terminus trilogy
John Dies at the End tetralogy
Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy
Obviously I really enjoy sci-fi, but I especially love when there is a big mystery that involves reality, or our understanding of science. I really like how the JDatE novels add some pretty intense horror into the books, but in a lighthearted way. Speculative evolution is also great, I read All Tomorrows and loved it. If there isn't some big mystery to solve then I doubt it'll hook me, but I'm willing to try different genres.
I really enjoy the works of Lovecraft, and the idea that there is some ultimate, terrifying truth behind reality or the universe.
Sorry if this is all over the place, I'm on a ton of meds recovering from bronchitis so I have some wonderful brain fog I'm dealing with.
Thank you!

Your taste isn’t all over place at all – you clearly dig cosmic horror meets hard sci-fi with mystery elements. Based on what you listed, maybe try some Greg Bear or Peter Watts if you haven’t already. The blend of scientific speculation with existential dread in those authors might scratch that same itch you get from Lovecraft but with more modern physics thrown in.
