I only read non-fiction, and it's all written in a sort of historical past tense. For example, some World War 2 stuff. The author wasn't even alive for WW2. Or some white as fuck European person writing about what happened in Afghanistan in 1842.
This is the first book I've read where the writer develops the story as they are experiencing it in real time, and they sort of become part of the conspiracy.
Basically something like: "I decided to write this story and then somebody tried to silence / assassinate me. Here's how it happened in real time."
I'm not even finished the book. I'm about half way through but when I finish it I want more page turners like this.

Try “Dark Money” – Koch brothers tried to shut down that investigation pretty hard and author had to deal with serious pushback while researching it.
