My (32M) wife (32F) is really hyping up Throne of Glass and strongly suggesting I read it. I’m (newly) into sci-fi and fantasy but I’m iffy on this series. She’s REALLY into different S. J. Maas books so I’m taking her recommendation as a bit of fandom bias.
I can totally do romance as long as it’s good writing but Im really sensitive to cheesiness. I just finished Red Rising and wanted to read Mistborn next but may switch to TOG? Should I read Throne of Glass? Is it universally liked by fantasy fans? I’ve heard it’s more for a specific demographic.. specifically young women.. but don’t want to write it off due to the male propaganda from my friends. Let me know what you think!

Read Mistborn. Mistborn is really good, first book is a bit YA but it grows up pretty quick. I’ve also tried SJM and really didn’t jive with it. I too know many people who love the books, also all women.
Worth testing out, but yea wasn’t for me.
The first book is pretty rough ngl – it reads like YA fantasy from 2012 because that’s literally what it is 😂 But the series does get way better as it goes on and Sarah J Maas really finds her footing
Since you mentioned being sensitive to cheesiness, I’d say maybe try the first book but don’t judge the whole series on it. The romance stuff gets less cringey and more complex in later books, and the world-building actually becomes pretty solid
if you’re coming off Red Rising though you might want to cleanse your palate with Mistborn first – it’s got that tight magic system and political intrigue that might feel more familiar after Pierce Brown’s intensity. Then circle back to TOG when you’re ready for something different 💀
