I don't know why but for some reason I tend to get in the mood for urban fantasy during the summer. I love the vibe of 90s-2000's urban fantasy but I feel like I already know everything that's out there 😞 It doesn't necessarily have to be from the 2000s, it can also be published more recently. However I often find that newer urban fantasy just doesn't hit the same way. Sometimes it's too romance heavy, sometimes there's too much bad humor, sometimes it's just too cheesy, or the author is just doing too much. It's okay you don't need to include every single mythical being from every culture + aliens in one book. :/ Sometime it just becomes too ridiculous. Obviously it's fantasy but still I'm good with just a couple critters. I hope you guys get what I'm trying to say, I don't really know how else I could try to describe what I'm looking for. Below I will put a list of books that I've already read and which ones I liked and which ones I didn't. I hope that will also kinda reflect what vibe I'm looking for in a book. Thanks in advance 😄

    Series that I enjoyed:

Anita Blake Series by Laurell K Hamilton-> loved the first 10 books after that it was too much smut

Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs -> I read the first 7 books. I really liked the first couple ones but now it's kinda starting to feel repetitive

Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost -> Read the first 3 books, a little heavy on the smut for my liking but still good. probably won't continue though

Kittie Norville Series by Carrie Vaughn -> Went into it with low expectations but it's actually pretty good so far! I listened to the first two books on libby. They are not as good as my favorites in the Anita Blake/mercy Thompson Series but still very enjoyable.

So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison -> Standalone. Not the typical UF vi´be at all, it's a horror book but easily one of my favorite books.

Book Series that were just okay:

October Daye Series by Seanan McGuire- Kinda boring. Just read the first one and won't continue. Didn't give me the typical Urban Fantasy Vibe.

Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning- I read the first 3. They were entertaining but probably won't continue. I would say they are actually a little better than just okay but they didn't quite make it in the top category either.

Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews: Started the audio book of book one but I just couldn't get into it. DNF. Bordering on doing too much with the whole cars using ley lines to drive ( or something like that. can't exactly remember)

Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill -> Just okay. Not bad by any means but also not amazing.

Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris -> Just okay. The show is way better in my opinion and I rewatch it like once a year. Season 1 is the best. 2&3 are also good but after that it starts going downhill a little.

The Hollows Series by -> DNFed book one because I couldn't really get into it BUT I do want to revisit it.

Cassandra Palmer Series by Karen Chance -> DNFed book one. couldn't get into it.

Walker Papers Series by C.E. Murphy -> Read Book one. Boring.

The Mediator by Meg Cabot -> Read book one. It was just okay. Not really the vibe I'm looking for because it's ya

Fang Fiction by Kate Stayman-London – Standalone. It was entertaining but not the vibe that I like. A little too far on the fantasy side.

My Vampires Series/My Roomate is a Vampire -> More of a Rom Com. Not my vibe, not my type of humor, didn't like the love interest at all. Kinda cringy but entertaining i guess.

The Watch Hill Trilogy by Karen Marie Moning- Book one was kinda boring. I'll probably check out book two though. I still have hope that it'll get better.

Book Series I didn't really like:

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward- Too much smut, boring, didn't give me the typical UF vibe either. Read book one and won't continue.

Innkepper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews -> I had high hopes for this one but ended up pretty disappointed. Premise sounds great but it was boring and why are alien vampire visiting with their spaceship? bordering on too ridiculous. Book one was enough for me.

Riley Jenson Guardian by Keri Arthur -> Somehow made it through book one. Easily the worst book I have ever read. Questionable consent.

Haven't read but I'm considering giving it a try:

Alpha& Omega Series by Patricia Briggs -> Haven't read any of them but I guess I could try them since I enjoyed Mercy Thompson.

Is there any hope of finding another urban fantasy series I'll become addicted to ? :/

You might enjoy Tanya Huff’s Vicki Nelson books. IIRC the first one is BLOOD TIES.

Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin starting with A Madness of Angels. My favorite urban fantasy series. Rivers of London has a little smut but it’s not overwhelming. Brotherhood of the Wheel is also pretty good.
