Although they’re translated from Spanish, I think you’ll be impressed by Isabel Allende’s novels. I enjoyed a number, including *The Wind Knows My Name*, *My Name Is Emilia del Valle, The House of the Spirits, In the Midst of Winter…*even her *Zorro*.

V. S. Naipaul.
His prose is very carefully constructed and you can tell just by the reading of it.

Peter Taylor. *A Summons to Memphis*.
Saul Bellow. *Herzog*.
John Updike. *Rabbit, Run*.
Ann Beattie. *Onlookers*.
Cynthia Ozick. *The Puttermesser Papers*.
Stanley Elkin. *The Franchiser*.
I agree with the previous commenter’s suggestion of V.S. Naipaul as well.
